Narrative Theories – Pt 26

Our story line fits into parts of both “Propps Theory of Narrative” and “The Binary Opposites Narrative”.

The Propps Theory On Narrative:

This theory is based around the idea that all story lines have the same internal structure and 8 main charterer types, These are:

  • The villain
  • The hero
  • The donor – provides an object with magical property
  • The helper who aids the hero
  • The princess – the reward for the hero
  • Her father – who rewards the hero
  • The dispatcher- who sends the hero on his way
  • The false hero

I think our story line fits well with this narrative because we have a lot of these characters, such as a hero and a villain  most simply but also a false hero and a helper as well as a dispatcher.

The other narrative theory that fits our story line well is “The Binary Opposites Narrative”, This theory suggests that there is an opposite for almost every thing in a film such as:

  • A hero and a villain
  • Weak and Strong
  • Inside and Outside Society

I think our story line also fits this idea through having a hero and villain as well as both mystery and yet opacity and through also having good and bad, life and death and so on.
