Narrative Theories – Pt 26

Our story line fits into parts of both “Propps Theory of Narrative” and “The Binary Opposites Narrative”.

The Propps Theory On Narrative:

This theory is based around the idea that all story lines have the same internal structure and 8 main charterer types, These are:

  • The villain
  • The hero
  • The donor – provides an object with magical property
  • The helper who aids the hero
  • The princess – the reward for the hero
  • Her father – who rewards the hero
  • The dispatcher- who sends the hero on his way
  • The false hero

I think our story line fits well with this narrative because we have a lot of these characters, such as a hero and a villain  most simply but also a false hero and a helper as well as a dispatcher.

The other narrative theory that fits our story line well is “The Binary Opposites Narrative”, This theory suggests that there is an opposite for almost every thing in a film such as:

  • A hero and a villain
  • Weak and Strong
  • Inside and Outside Society

I think our story line also fits this idea through having a hero and villain as well as both mystery and yet opacity and through also having good and bad, life and death and so on.

Key Elements to Include in our opening – Pt 24

The key elements that we will need to include in our opening are:

  • Keep the shots dark
  • Make sure the opening has a sense of mystery
  • Start the scene with action
  • Base the opening around crime
  • Don’t give the whole story away in the opening
  • Keep certain characters anonymous
  • Keep the opening interesting
  • Establish the main characters

Produce, Distribute and Exhibit – Pt 21

Producing & Distributing

For producing and distributing my film I decided to go with Paramount Pictures as my production company as they are very well known and have produced many famous film noirs such as “Double Indemnity” and “Sunset Boulevard” choosing a bigger company such as paramount would help when producing due to their experience in what makes a good film and also the best ways to distribute a film. I also chose a company such as paramount as they carry a good reputation and attract a large audience of viewers which would help to make the film a success.

Showing

For showing my film I went with Odeon cinemas who are once again a large scale cinema company but this means that they have lots of venues and also enough turn over to afford to be able to show smaller scale films. I also went with Odeon because my target audience are likely to be living in the city and a large majority of cities have an Odeon cinema which would help reach my target audience. My target audience are very likely to live in a city or town and this would help to ensure that they can easily get to the cinema and help to attract a larger audience

Pearl and Dean – Pt 20

ew

The term GAP stands for “General Audience Profile” and this shows a certain percentage of people in a specific category that watch films at the cinema.

My target audience was age 25-34 roughly and these people make up 20.4% of most cinema viewings along with the class I chose of slightly leaning towards upper being the stronger class with upper taking up approximately 66.3% of cinema viewings suggesting that this would be a good target audience. The data also suggests that the balance between male and female viewings is almost identical and this could suggest that I should adjust my target audience to be both male and female.

These demographics help me to identify my target audience and adapt it to make it a good film that would do well when viewed.

Perfect audience member – Pt 19

After considering possible audiences and looking on http://www.uktribes.com for further information I decided that my perfect audience member would be a late 20’s mid 30’s aged male however to an extent and older audience could also be considered as an accurate target audience as film noir would have been big when they where younger with a big boom in film noir in the 1950’s.

My perfecte976fbea3a45b422a8029e0f7d5825d1 audience member would be interested in history possibly as well as crime movies and would likely be well dressed and formal to reflect many of the aspects of typical film noir. They would likely have interests in more classical music as this is very common amongst film noirs and also be in favour of both posh dinners like film noir or at the other end of the spectrum very easy takeaway food and simple meals.

Audience Research – Pt 18

Some good or well known film openings:

Casino Royale – Pre title sequence

The Matrix

Goodfellas

Les Miserables

Indiana Jones

Above are some popular or famous film openings but are not limited to the above selection. After speaking to some of my friends and family I found out a variety of information with regards to that makes a film opening good or bad and what makes a film in general good or bad. The main points that made for a good film and opening that I found where:

  • The film establishes a clear genre and setting
  • The opening should be catchy and grab the audiences attention
  • The opening needs to create suspense
  • The opening shouldn’t give away the plot of the film
  • The film should create an atmosphere
Here are some things that I discovered make for a bad film:
  • No action or setting given
  • Very little of interest
  • No suspense created
  • Too much plot in the opening
  • Too wordy

I asked a range of people to ensure that I got good answers and that represented all ages. I did this by asking my friends as well as members of my family both old and young. I arrived at these results by looking at which things appeared the most and where similar and tried to collate these together to arrive at a completed set of results.
